Generative Engine Optimization
GEOGenerative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of optimizing content and brand signals so generative AI systems surface, quote, and cite you in their responses.
GEO and Answer Engine Optimization are used almost interchangeably. If there is a nuance: AEO is framed around answering questions, while GEO is framed around influencing what generative models produce — including citations, brand mentions, and the framing of your category.
GEO tactics include publishing clearly-structured, extractable content, earning authoritative mentions across the web (models learn from what others say about you), maintaining consistent entity data, and adding an llms.txt file to guide AI crawlers.
Frequently asked
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking in search-engine results pages; GEO optimizes for being surfaced and cited inside generative AI answers. GEO builds on SEO fundamentals but targets AI systems rather than the classic results list.
