Featured Snippet
A featured snippet is a highlighted answer box at the top of Google's results that directly answers a query, pulled from one ranking page and shown above the standard list.
Often called "position zero," a featured snippet captures the click for question-style searches. Winning one requires ranking on page one and structuring the content so Google can lift a clean, self-contained answer — a short definition, a numbered list, or a table.
Featured snippets and Google AI Overviews reward the same thing: clear, extractable answers. Content built to win snippets is also more likely to be cited by AI answer engines.
Frequently asked
How do you win a featured snippet?
Rank on page one for the query, then answer the question directly and concisely near the top of the page — a 40–60 word definition, a step list, or a table Google can lift verbatim.
